July in Stuttgart – Corona edition

Everything looked so promising: covid infections dropping, vaccination rate rising, sun shining… And then this new Delta variant of the virus came into play. I was hoping that this month’s post about fun events this July in Stuttgart might be a normal one. But nope. It will still be a Corona edition where I point out online events or things to do where the risk of catching (or spreading) the virus ist very low.

This is something for all my American readers: On July 2 you can learn how to prepare the perfect July 4th snack at Snack-a-Vaganza on youtube. The event is organized by d.a.i Tübingen.
On July 2 you can also check out the Tour of Hope. The live stream will bring the work of DJ Jens Herzberg, mainly House and Techno, from the rooftop terrace of Stuttgart Library directly into your living room (or where ever you might be :-)) You can follow the event here youtube.de/stadtbibliothekstuttgartyt
Between July 14 and 18 you can join the nature film festival Natur Vision online. You can dive into a variation of topics while watching “Beauty and the Bees”, “Bikes vs. Cars” or “Chicks on Boards” to name just a few.
Between July 21 and 25 the Indian Film Festival Stuttgart will also be celebrated online. The festival pass (18 Euro) allows you to watch current feature films, short films and documentaries from all over India for five days at home.
Meet other English speakers around the globe virtually on July 12 at Stammtisch Transatlantik.
The book club of DAZ (Deutsch Amerikanische Zentrum) will meet online on Zoom on July 22 in order to discuss “Night Sky with Exit Wounds” by Ocean Vuong.

But it is summer and of course we don’t want to sit at home in front of a computer all day. So: Get out there! 😀

All the public outdoor pools of Stuttgart and the area are open now. You have to buy your ticket online in advance. In order to avoid the crowds you might consider going in the morning.
In my last post on the blog I have pointed out 4 fun outings for families with toddlers. In this article I share my 3 favorite short walks and a highlight of Stuttgart with you.
Any hikers here? Check out the hikes in the area of Leinfelden-Echterdingen! The city has published two hiking guide books in English which you can download free of charge: Refreshing Walks and Idyllic Recreation at Siebenmühlental. Don’t be astonished when you check out the cover of the first guide book and think the lady on the picture looks familiar – I am the co-author 🙂

What’s up in Stuttgart this April – Corona-edition

Hello you lovely people. I haven’t done a “What’s up this month”-post in a while. But here it comes again for this April, a Corona-edition with online events and things to do that won’t increase the risk of infecting yourself or others. Have a great April, despite the whole crazy situation!

On April 1 Stuttgart Ballet offers Beethoven-Ballette as video-on-Demand. It will stay online until April 5.
Every Thursday between 1:15 pm and 1:45 pm you can pimp your lunch break with a virtual Lunchkonzert, performed by the musicians of Staatsorchester Stuttgart.
If you follow my blog for a while, you know that I am a huge fan of Escape/Exit Games! D.a.i. Tübingen offers an online one in English on April 8.
Calling all book lovers! You like reading books and discussing them afterwards? Then you can join the online Book Discussion on April 9, organized by d.a.i Tübingen. This month’s topic:James Baldwin, Go Tell it on the Mountain.
Join English-speaking people from all over the world who meet once a month for good and casual conversation at Stammtisch Transatlantik, organized by DAZ on April 12.
On April 12, the theatre group NEAT will present the virtual play “Dolores“ by Edward Allan Baker on youtube.
You like boardgames? Than you might want to join the virtual boardgame night of d.a.i on April 15!
A very special modern ballet project can be watched online on April 16. Eric Gauthier, creative head of Gauthier Dance at Theaterhaus Stuttgart, and altogether 64 artists (!) have come up with “The Dying Swan Project”. At 16 locations in Stuttgart the team has shot dance videos that will take your breath away. The virtual premier takes place on April 16 on the youtube channel of Theaterhaus Stuttgart and on Eric Gautier’s Intagram account.
On April 22 it is Earth Day. You can celebrate this special day by joining this online event, a transatlantic dialogue between a top ranger of the Yosemite National Park, established in 1890, and a senior staff member of the Black Forest National Park, established in 2014.

Start into spring with new energy!

I think we all feel quite exhausted these days. Do you know what helps me to get my energy back? The forest! To be more precise, “Forest Bathing”.

I LOVE spending time in the woods. I used to go to the forest by myself when I had stress at work or didn’t feel good. Now, as a mom, I take the little one out there nearly every day. Did you know that the air in the forest can stimulate our immune system? And that spending time in the forest reduces our stress level? That is scientifically proven and quite awesome, don’t you think?! 🙂

Some of you know that I am not only a blogger and journalist but that I am also a forest bathing coach and author of hiking books (in German tough…). And this spring I think it is time for all of us to get out there, to find our energy and raise our good mood! We really need it after such a long, hard and lonely winter.

On April 18 I will guide an English Forest Bathing course in Stuttgart-Degerloch. Meeting point is Haus des Waldes. The course will start at 2 pm and we will be in the woods for 4 hours. I will talk about the forest air and all the positive effects the forest has on us humans (it is really fascinating, guys!:-)). If you want to find out more or book the course visit vhs-stuttgart.de. Of course, it depends on the covid situation in April, if the course can run or not.

If you speak German and are interested in a Forest Bathing (“Waldbaden”) course: I offer courses in German on April 11 in Leinfelden-Echterdingen and on April 17 in Stuttgart Degerloch. And – new new new 🙂 – I will start an online based course on Mach 28. This one will be unaffected by any future lockdowns. It will run for four weeks with one virtual group meeting every Sunday where I tell you all about forest bathing and introduce you to the different techniques. Then you can decided yourself when you want to go to the forest. In the next online meeting we will talk about your experiences and I will introduce you to the next set of techniques. This course will be held in German only at the moment but if you are interested in a future online based forest bathing course in English, drop me an email to mel@living-in-stuttgart.com!

“What is forest bathing?” you ask now? Let me explain…

What is Forest Bathing?

The term forest bathing stems from the Japanese term “Shinrin Yoku” which translates to “bathing in the forest air.” Japanese scientists have studied the forest air and its healthy benefits for humans for the last 30 years and they came to some very interesting findings. How Terpenes, aromatic organic compounds that are released by trees when they are attached by predators effect our immune system for example. Or that being in the forest can reduce our stress level significantly. Or how just looking at a green scenery can reduce pain…. I could go on forever because there are so many fascinating findings. I will talk more about them in my courses.

The main idea of forest bathing is that you go into the woods and benefit from its positive effects on you. You benefit from the healthy forest air by just being in the woods already. If you want to focus on stress reduction, there are several techniques that help you do so. From focusing on your senses to walking slowly on the forest floor to becoming creative in and with the forest. You will be stunned by how much simple exercises effect your wellbeing and your level of energy.

The best part about forest bathing: It is super simple and sooo efficient. If you want to try it for yourself already you can do the following:

Go into the nearest forest. Did you know that 24 percent of Stuttgart is covered with forest?! You should have one close to where you live, too.
Leave the trail. For me, this is the most important step. It is that easy to dive into a new world, away from the stress and worries of everyday life. A few meters away from the trail you feel like you’re in the wilderness already.
Find a place in the forest where you feel comfortable and sit down. Maybe on a tree trunk or simply on the ground.
Close your eyes.
Listen. Smell. Feel. Be.
There is so much you can focus on. The sound of the birds. The smell of the forest air (healthy Terpenes, remember?! :-)), the wind on your cheeks. Focus on whatever feels good for you in this moment. For me, this is pure meditation.
When you’re ready, open your eyes again and sit a bit longer in the forest. How do you feel now? Calmer than before? How is your mind? More relaxed?
If you feel a positive effect of this mini forest bath already, start planing your next trip to the forest. The more often you can include it in your weekly routines, the bigger the effects on your immune system and stress level.

September in Stuttgart in times of Corona

Whoops, where is summer gone?! It felt like autumn the last days… Hopefully September in Stuttgart will bring some more warm days! As I have explained in the event posts in the last months, I only point out events this September in Stuttgart that are safe to participate in from my personal point of view. This is why this event post is shorter then you know it from pre-Covid-times.

The beloved wine festival Stuttgarter Weindorf takes place virtually until September 6. Wine tastings, fun interviews and more await us. However, the streaming will be in German so you should be able to understand a bit of the language in order to enjoy the livestream. But if you want to celebrate your own little Weindorf, you can do so as well. Just buy one of their pre-selected baskets in the online shop and taste wines of the region on your balcony, in your garden or the park!
The Cannstatter Wasen, our version of the Okotoberfest, can’t take place this year, too. But you will find a “Mini-Wasen” in the streets of Stuttgart until October 2. At 29 locations (for example at Königstraße or in front of the Stiftskirche) you will find food trucks and some fun-fair-like huts. It is super important that we support these businesses now, otherwise the Canstatter Wasen will be quite empty next year. So “Bratwurst for everybody” and “Hello fairy floss!” 🙂
For two years in a row the art installation Stuttgart am Meer (Stuttgart by the sea) at Stadtpalais Stuttgart has brought breach vibes to downtown Stuttgart. This year the festival has changed it’s name to Kopf über Wasser (head above water) and its goal is to help all of us to get through the pandemic as good and happy as we can. You can for example book a time slot for your personal visit to “the dues of Stuttgart” at Stadtpalais and escape the heat of the city – or you have a little BBQ! The art installation will take place at Stadtpalais until September 13
The Wasen has turned into a huge pop-up drive-in-cinema. At Kulturwasen you can enjoy “Greatest Showman” on September 5 in the original version.
And also the area at Römerkastell has become a huge open-air stage. On September 4 and 5 a Flamenco show awaits you, on September 9 you can enjoy an open air Jazz concert and on September 12 one of my favorite local singers, Fola Dada, will perform at Römerkastell.
Join the online meeting of the Empire Study Group of DAZ (Deutsch Amerikanisches Zentrum) on September 11.. Each session focuses on a different article or topic. You will be able to share your experiences as well as your thoughts on a particular subject and reading.
Some artists are SO creative. The band Dundu came up with the idea of Spazierkonzerte (promenading concerts). Until September 20 you can enjoy their music every Saturday at Feursee between 3 and 6 pm and at Ecksee in front of the opera house between 6:30 and 9 pm. Bring a picnic blanket, a bottle of wine (maybe from the online shop of Stuttgarter Weindorf ;-)) and enjoy the music!
Theaterhaus has put together a special open air program this summer, too. On September 13 for example you can enjoy Eric Gautier, who is not only a famous ballet dancer and choreograph but also a great musician.
Go for a hike on September 20, the Day of the Swabian Forest. You can buy drinks along the way.

July in Stuttgart in times of Corona

These are strange times. On the one hand I get the impression the pandemic is not happening anymore. Especially when I see crowds of people roaming the streets and shops. On the other hand I fear the next lockdown… I have to admit I was debating with myself about this post. I know that some sort of events are allowed again. But I personally avoid going to events at the moment to help prevent the spread of the virus. So should I point out events here on the blog?? In the end I decided to point out only events that I would attend which means either online events or events that take place outdoors/in your own car/in a very limited setting indoors. So here comes another very short and personal overview over what’s going on this July in Stuttgart in times of Corona.

A few weeks ago designers from Stuttgart have created posters to cheer us up in these difficult times. You might have spottet some of them on public spaces. Until July 15 you can visit the Public Poster Gallery in a special exhibition at Stadtpalais Stuttgart for free.
Every Wednesday the lovely bookshop Sweet Things and Stories organizes an online book auction!
Kulturwasen is still going on and some fun movies await us in their original version: Ask Tesadüfleri Sever 2 (Turkish) on July 5, Mad Max: Fury Road (English) on July 6, La La Land (English) on July 7 and Blues Brothers (English) on July 22.
Kraftpaule will organize another online beer tasting on July 3! The event will be held in German but the beer tastes the same whatever language you speak 🙂
The international La Leche Liga Bad-Cannstatt will meet on July 4 – either virtually or at Haus der Familie, depending on how many people want to attend and what other events will take place on that day. If you want to attend you can follow their Facebook page for more information.
On July 6 you can follow the lecture Making Democracy work again, organized by DAZ, in a free online zoom session.
Do you want to meet other moms in Stuttgart? Then join the next virtual mom talk organized by Gravidamiga on July 8.
The 17th Indian Film Festival will be held in an online version. For 4,99 Euro you can purchase a festival pass and enjoy all the movies from your couch between July 15 and 19. Tickets can be purchases online.
On July 16 you can join the DAZ reading group and talk about the book “Florida” by Lauren Groff in a free zoom session.
A fun live mystery game awaits us on July 25: You can play Witchcraft and Wizardry in downtown Stuttgart starting at 9 am. The whole event will take place outdoor.
Feeling like Mexican cuisine? Then learn how to cook like a Mexican – on July 25 in an online course from vhs Stuttgart!
The Christopher Street Day Stuttgart will take place virtually and live this year between July 10 and 26. You can follow the events online here. For an overview over all events please check the official website of CSD Stuttgart.

What’s up this June in Stuttgart – Corona edition

As the ease of the corona regulations is progressing more events are possible again. Here comes an overview over creative solutions event makers came up with in order to entertain us this June in Stuttgart while still being careful to not spread the virus.

Kulturwasen is probably the biggest new event format these days. At the Wasen, the same area where usually the Frühlingsfest and Volksfest take place, you can enjoy movies and concerts – in your car. And the best: the movies can watched in their original language, you simply have to select the right cannel on your car radio. Kids will for example love Pets 2 on Monday, June 1 at 2 pm or Peter Rabbit on June 6 at 3:15 pm. Cinema lovers Bohemian Rhapsody on Monday, June 1 at 5:15 pm, Grease on June 6 at 9:30 pm or A Star is born on June 7 at 6 pm. Even some (German) bands will visit Kulturwasen like pop singer Tim Bendzko on June 6 or rapper Sido on June 15. You find more information about how to get tickets and such in English here.
Livesommer 2020 – Car concerts follows the same format. At Flughafen Stuttgart you can enjoy a night out with good music – in your car. You can for example go see singer-songwriter Michael Patrick Kelly on June 13 or listen to rock’n roll tunes on June 20 and 21.
Thinkers & Drinkers organizes an online workout every Wednesday at 7 pm and Saturday at 3 pm.
Every Wednesday at 2 pm Gravidamiga organizes a free Zoom mama talk about changing topics.
From June 1 to June 5 you can watch the opera Don Giovanni live and on-demand on the website of Opera Stuttgart.
StuttgarterBallet@home will show JIŘÍ KYLIÁNS ONE OF A KIND on June 4 on their website.
An amazing new format is organized by Opera Stuttgart at the moment: 1:1 Concerts. You can apply for a 10 minute performance just for you in exchange to a donation.
You like craft beer but are bored of drinking it all by yourself at home? Then don’t miss the Online Craft Beer Festival on June 27, organized by Kraftpaule! The presentations will be in German but you can still enjoy the different brands and the feeling of sharing the experience with a big community – and brush up your German at the same time 😀

Events this March in Stuttgart

So I guess that was a winter without winter in Stuttgart, right?! Very, very strange… Anyway, let‘s look forward: March is waiting for us around the corner! Here come my favorite events and things to do this March in Stuttgart. (It is a rather short overview this time with just the events I think are the most important ones this March in Stuttgart. I am still in Tasmania at the moment, enjoying a fantastic Elternzeit adventure with my hubby and the little one and internet on the campsite we are stayting at the moment is quite slow…)

The next Dark Monday by NEAT will take place on March 2 at Merlin.
Starting on March 3 Laufmamalauf will offer post-natal fitness classes in Englisch every Tuesday morning at 9:30 am at Bärenseen in Stuttgart-Vaihingen.
If you like French movies in their original version visit Jour fixe du Cinema on March 4 at Delphi Arthaus cinema. The movie Sibyl will be shown in French with German subtitles.
Stuttgart Expat Meetups will organize a 2 € Craft Beer Night on March 6 at Bierothek.

How about introducing your little one to classical music? You can do so on March 8 at Kleiner Kursaal Bad-Cannstatt at Babykonzert. Yep, you’ve read correctly, this is a live concert for babies and their families. 😊

The French Weeks are going on in and around Stuttgart between March 18 and 29. This year‘s focus: Africa. Check out their calendar to get an overview over all the events.
Eastern is waiting around the corner so it is time to get prepared. You can do so at the International Eastern and Art Fair on March 21 and 22 at Schwabenlandhalle in Fellbach.
You like food and everything that comes with it? Than you will love the fair Kulinart! Here you will find trends and talents and the one or other exquisite treat. The fair can be found at Phoenixhalle Römerkastell between March 21 and 22.

Mark March 21 in your calendar because this is when one of my favorite events in Stuttgart takes place: Long Night of Museums (Lange Nacht der Museen). More than 80 museums, galleries and off-spaces invite you to indulge in their special exhibitions.
Theater meets flea market on March 26 when Schauspielhaus Stuttgart opens its gates and closets for a big Vintage Salon. Here you can find used costumes as well as used clothes.
The weather is lovely and you’re looking for a nice getaway? Bärenschlössle next to Stuttgart-Vaihingen and Stuttgart-West is absolutely gorgeous to visit on a sunny day. You can walk around the lakes, have a coffee break at the little castle itself or walk all the way over to castle Solitude. Check out my post about this beauty here.

This is your last chance to have a Glühwein on a Christmas market in Stuttgart this year: Wintertraum at Schlossplatz with its few stands and the ice rink is still open this weekend in Stuttgart.
Go sledding in downtown Stuttgart at Stadtpalais: Stuttgart im Schnee/Stuttgart covered in snow is a fun urban installation with special events and a slope for sleds that will be open this weekend in Stuttgart.
Look behind the scenes of one of Germany’s largest constructions sites at Stuttgarter Hauptbahnhof this weekend as they have Days of the Open Construction Site.
If you haven’t visited Christmas Garden at Wilhelma yet, this weekend is your last chance!

2020! A brand new year. Let’s hope it will be a good one, filled with peace, health, happiness and laughter. All the Christmas themed events are over but there is still a lot going on this January in Stuttgart!

One tiny Christmas market is left until January 6 in Stuttgart: Wintertraum at Schlossplatz with its few stands and the ice rink.
Go sledding in downtown Stuttgart at Stadtpalais: Stuttgart im Schnee/Stuttgart covered in snow is a fun urban installation with special events and a slope for sleds that will be open throughout January in Stuttgart.
You like figure ice skating and the old tradition of Russian circuses? Then Circus on Ice will be your thing! You can visit the show throughout January.
Go ice dancing at Eisdisco Waldau every Sunday this January in Stuttgart!
Every Wednesday the City Library offers a free course for teens who want to improve their German skills.
In my opinion the best circus in Stuttgart: Until January 6 you have the chance to visit Weltweihnachtszirkus at Cannstatter Wasen. Fun for the young and the young at heart. The show will be held in German but you don’t need to speak the language to enjoy all the different acts.
