Dance for everybody “Colours- International Dance Festival”

Stuttgart is moved by colours these days. After I had visited the pre-opening of “Colours – International Dance Festival” at the Marktplatz two weeks ago, I couldn’t wait for it to begin. I had booked the workshop “Dance for everybody (Tanz für alle)” held by Eric Gauthier, artistic director of the festival and director of the Gauthier Dance/Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart.

We were 30 people in the workshop. Some were semi-professional dancers, others (like me) were there for fun. And fun we had! Eric is a very relaxed guy and an entertaining coach. It was interesting to see a pro like him at work. He came up with a choreography for us during the workshop. We tried something, if it looked good, we adopted it, if it looked bad, he thought of something else.

I think we did quite well even though we lost it as soon as he stopped leading and guiding us… Smiley Oh well, I think we might need one or two more rehearsals but then we should be ready for the big stage! ;-P

It was great to see that also non-professional dancers like us can successfully perform a choreography that looks quite nice after three hours of practising. It all depends on having the right teacher Smiley. So thank you Eric for a fun afternoon and a great workshop!

Now I am even more excited to see some of the international dance companies at Colours! I got invited to see three performances: “Kamuyot” – performed by Gauthier Dance, “m¡longa” – from the Flemish-Moroccan star choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and “Blue Love” by the Shaun Parker Company. Stay tuned for more!

Colours International Dance Festival 2015

Are you moved by colours already, too? Eric Gauthiers “Colours – International Dance Festival” has featured a special pre-opening event on Friday at Marktplatz: “Colours in the City”. (Sorry for the slightly blurry pictures, my camera went on strike and I had to use my phone…)

Despite the grey sky hundreds of ballet – and Eric Gauthier – junkies made their way to Marktplatz, right in front of the city hall, to take part in the free mini workshops and watch short extracts of the performances that will be held at Theaterhaus from the 25th of June to the 12th of July.

I wasn’t sure if workshops with such a large crowd would work well – but they did! Stuttgart was truly moved by colours! No matter if it was Hip Hop, Bollywood or classical Ballet, everybody was participating! Only the tango lesson was a bit too tricky for some of us… Smiley

It was so much fun dancing in such a large crowd. It wasn’t that hard, either. Plus, dancers from Eric Gauthier’s dance company were everywhere and if you couldn’t follow what was going on on the stage or the big screen, you could look at them.

Next to the workshops there were performances of the international dance companies that will participate in the festival.

My favorite was the “football ballet”. Yep, you read correctly. A slow motion scene from a football match, VfB Stuttgart against Borussia Dortmund Smiley, where Stuttgart gets a free kick. Sososo good! Eric Gauthier plays the referee who has to deal with cheeky players that hit each other behind his back and stuff like that. Very, very funny Smiley

After this great pre-opening, I am even more excited about the festival. I got tickets for three performances: “Kamuyot” – performed by Gauthier Dance, “m¡longa” – from the Flemish-Moroccan star choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and “Blue Love” by the Shaun Parker Company. Plus, I will participate in a workshop held by Eric Gauthier: “Dance for everybody” – and after the short workshops at Marktplatz, I think this will be really, really good! Smiley Hurry up if you want to see some performances as well, most of the shows are sold out already!

How about you, guys? Did you participate in the pre-opening event, too? How did you like it? Or will you go see a show at the Theaterhaus? Feel free to share your thoughts! Smiley

Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

If you like ballet, Stuttgart is your city. We don’t only have the world famous company of Die Staatstheater Stuttgart, we also have fantastic Gauthier Dance. Best contemporary ballet company EVER! You don’t believe me? Go see them. You don’t like ballet? Go see them, too. You will change your mind! But you have to be quick, most of their performances are sold out long in advance.

I am lucky because I have the best mother-in-law you could think of, who had organized two tickets for Alice, the newest production of Gauthier Dance. (Thank you again, Barbara!)

We started the evening in the restaurant in front of Theaterhaus Stuttgart with some drinks before we entered Alice’s crazy and fascinating world…

You all know Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, right? And yes, it counts if you haven’t read the book but seen one of the movies Zwinkerndes Smiley. Quick summary: Girl falls into rabbit hole, keeps shrinking and growing , meets lot’s of unusual creatures, has a cup of tea and plays some croquet – nothing unusual…

The interpretation of choreographer Mauro Bigonzetti introduces the audience and the two Alices (yep, there are two of them) to the fascinating, scary, beautiful, crazy, mind-blowing world of the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat and many other otherworldly creatures. In the first few minutes you keep wondering what this is, why Alice consist of tall and adventurous Alice (Anna Süheyla Harms) and small and serious Alice (Garazi Perez Oloriz – who looks a lot like Carrie from Sex and the city, what made the whole experience even more outlandish Smiley), but after a few minutes you allow yourself to drop into this strange world like Alice into the rabbit hole and all the nonsense suddenly… makes sense.

The performances are accompanied on stage by life music from Antongiulio Galeandro, Enza Pagliara and the group ASSURD (Cristina Vetrone, Enza Prestia and Lorella Monti).

Amazing show, great artists, songs that touch your soul – if you get the chance, get tickets and go see Alice! And if you have a spare one – take me with you! Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund

Next performances: 9. – 13. July 2014.
