Everything looked so promising: covid infections dropping, vaccination rate rising, sun shining… And then this new Delta variant of the virus came into play. I was hoping that this month’s post about fun events this July in Stuttgart might be a normal one. But nope. It will still be a Corona edition where I point out online events or things to do where the risk of catching (or spreading) the virus ist very low.

This is something for all my American readers: On July 2 you can learn how to prepare the perfect July 4th snack at Snack-a-Vaganza on youtube. The event is organized by d.a.i Tübingen.

On July 2 you can also check out the Tour of Hope. The live stream will bring the work of DJ Jens Herzberg, mainly House and Techno, from the rooftop terrace of Stuttgart Library directly into your living room (or where ever you might be :-)) You can follow the event here youtube.de/stadtbibliothekstuttgartyt

Between July 14 and 18 you can join the nature film festival Natur Vision online. You can dive into a variation of topics while watching “Beauty and the Bees”, “Bikes vs. Cars” or “Chicks on Boards” to name just a few.

Between July 21 and 25 the Indian Film Festival Stuttgart will also be celebrated online. The festival pass (18 Euro) allows you to watch current feature films, short films and documentaries from all over India for five days at home.

Meet other English speakers around the globe virtually on July 12 at Stammtisch Transatlantik.

The book club of DAZ (Deutsch Amerikanische Zentrum) will meet online on Zoom on July 22 in order to discuss “Night Sky with Exit Wounds” by Ocean Vuong.

But it is summer and of course we don’t want to sit at home in front of a computer all day. So: Get out there! 😀

All the public outdoor pools of Stuttgart and the area are open now. You have to buy your ticket online in advance. In order to avoid the crowds you might consider going in the morning.

In my last post on the blog I have pointed out 4 fun outings for families with toddlers. In this article I share my 3 favorite short walks and a highlight of Stuttgart with you.

Any hikers here? Check out the hikes in the area of Leinfelden-Echterdingen! The city has published two hiking guide books in English which you can download free of charge: Refreshing Walks and Idyllic Recreation at Siebenmühlental. Don’t be astonished when you check out the cover of the first guide book and think the lady on the picture looks familiar – I am the co-author 🙂

Another great hiking trail is Herzog-Jäger-Pfad at Waldenbuch. You find a virtual map here.

Have a great July in Stuttgart (or anywhere in the world :-)) and stay safe and healthy!

PS: Please note, this post contains links to fun activities. I did not get paid to mention them or link to them. The selection of events provided here is based on my personal research.

These are strange times. On the one hand I get the impression the pandemic is not happening anymore. Especially when I see crowds of people roaming the streets and shops. On the other hand I fear the next lockdown… I have to admit I was debating with myself about this post. I know that some sort of events are allowed again. But I personally avoid going to events at the moment to help prevent the spread of the virus. So should I point out events here on the blog?? In the end I decided to point out only events that I would attend which means either online events or events that take place outdoors/in your own car/in a very limited setting indoors. So here comes another very short and personal overview over what’s going on this July in Stuttgart in times of Corona.

At the beginning of this post I’ve promised that Stuttgart will move close to the ocean this month. Actually, Stuttgart will get its own sea this July in Stuttgart: Stuttgart am Meer/Stuttgart at the sea is the name of the summer festival of Stadtpalais that will be going on between July 18 and September 8. Next to a public pool a huge wave will be installed where you can go surfing. Moreover, the area around the palais will turn into a lush rainforest that brings nature directly into the city.

Wilhelma, the zoo and botanical garden of Stuttgart, will turn into a green concert hall on July 19. At several places you can listen to classical music performed by Staatsorchester Stuttgart and there will also be special performances for kids.

On July 19 teens (16 and older) can participate in a comic workshop in English at Café Adria and learn how to create interesting characters.

Celebrate Flamenco at the annual festival Flamenquitos between July 19 and August 3.

When the east of Stuttgart celebrates it gets hot. Live music, theater performances, circus attractions and of course food and drinks await you at Lange Ost Nacht/Long East Night on July 20.

At Cannstatter Kulturmenü you can explore the rich diversity this quarter has to offer when it comes to art, music and food on July 20.

Bring a picknick blanket, some snacks and good friends and enjoy Shades of White at Ballet im Park in front of the opera house on July 20.

On July 21 Killesberg and many of its attached cultural institutions celebrate a stylish Summer Festival.

Did you know that Wilhelmsplatz used to be the place where the hangman/Henker performed this cruel duty ages ago? Luckily things have changed and only the name of the annual street festival Henkersplatzfest reminds of these dark days. Nowadays it is just another fun street festival with live music and great food that is going on between July 24 and 27.

Moving to a new city in a different country can sometimes be a daunting experience. My friend and fellow blogger Rachel from rachelsanghee.com has taken this step a few years ago when she moved to Stuttgart with her husband. This June she will be teaching the new course Living in Stuttgart for International Women at vhs stuttgart where she will be sharing her own experiences and insights on how to settle in and adopt to a new life in a new city like Stuttgart. I talked to her about how she felt when she arrived here in 2012, what she would have loved to know back then and what her course will be about.

[This article is part of my non-paid cooperation with vhs stuttgart]

Rachel, you’ve moved to Stuttgart in 2012. What was difficult for you at the beginning?

Everything! From public transportation, shopping, buying groceries to finding a flat to getting hooked on with the internet. But that was the great and exciting thing about moving to Stuttgart. I’ve never lived in Europe so it was such a big change. But I have to say, it was so interesting, new, exciting and eye-opening all at the same time.

You even gave birth to your first child here in Stuttgart. How was it being pregnant in a foreign country? Did you find all the information about pregnancy and giving birth in Stuttgart that you needed?

I think I was more nervous than I should have been. In the end, moms get pregnant everywhere and it was my first time, so everything was new to me anyway. Perhaps it was tricky because I didn’t have much friends who were already pregnant and who could help me out with their insights and wisdom, but I’ve learned along the way through various channels, including websites, my doctors, hospital staff and even nurses. But yes, I’m thinking it did take a bit more time and effort to get all the info I needed.

You will be teaching the course Living in Stuttgart for International Women at vhs stuttgart this July. What motivated you to do so?

I love sharing my experiences and thoughts on everything, I think it comes from my journalist background or maybe I’m just nosy. I thought this would be a great opportunity to share my experiences as an expat and a woman, from childbirth, pregnancy, shopping and all those little details you face while starting a new life in this city. Moving to a foreign place is overwhelming already as it is, and since this course will be in English, I thought it could be a breath of fresh air and also act as a safe haven for everyone.

What awaits women in your course?

Everything and anything you want to know! This course is technically based on my experience and knowledge but anyone who has better ideas or suggestions can participate. Moving to a foreign country or city is not just a physical move, it’s about learning and adapting to a new environment, and I hope we all get to share the best of our knowledge and experiences beyond age, occupation and interests. I really do think everyone will be able to leave the course with ideas and inspiration, and hopefully use this as a fuel to further adapt themselves to their new lives in this wonderful city.

What would you consider as the most important advice for women who are new to Stuttgart? What would you have loved to know at the beginning?

Such a difficult question. To be open is important. Open to new ideas, new cultures and new people. Stuttgart is becoming more and more international and that means you are exposed to different ideas, cultures and people. There is in fact no “correct” or “right” way to adapt to Stuttgart, you need to find your own way. This course will hopefully guide you a bit, offer you shortcuts and help you discover your own way of adapting. I would have loved to know some useful shortcuts or insights on some aspects, like where to buy the best flowers or where to go when you need some good comfort food from wherever you are.

What motivated you to team up with vhs stuttgart and join their new English-speaking program?

The new English-speaking program proves how international this city has become and is becoming and, of course, I jumped on the opportunity. vhs international – English Program offers so many courses and events at a fair price. It doesn’t matter if you want to do sports, learn to cook or go to a business workshop – there is always something for everyone. I wish there was something like this when I first came here!

More information about Rachel’s course:

If you want to learn from Rachel’s experiences you can enroll here for her course Living in Stuttgart for International Women:

There is a fun and somewhat very special event coming to Stuttgart this month, that I would like to point out to you: World Trip through Living Rooms!

The idea is simple but awesome: A host from a foreign country who is living in Stuttgart is inviting people to his/her living room and will share with them stories, songs, information and food of his or her country. The participants get a passport and a stamp and can collect the countries they have “traveled” to. Sounds like fun, right?! 🙂

The world trip starts in Stuttgart on July 12, at 7 pm. The first country …

The first country on the list is Kenya. Participants will get the address as soon as they have checked-in (registered 🙂 )

I love this event! Like this you can meet new people easily, get to know more about foreign countries and cultures and maybe even make some new friends. Plus, it sound like a fun way to spend an evening, doesn’t it?

The idea of “World Trip through Living Rooms” stems from the club “Weltreise durch Wohnzimmer e.V.”. The first “World Trip” took place in 2011 – to China by the way. The goal is to bring people from different cultures together and to support an understanding for each other.

Please note that the main language of the event is German but the host is able to speak English, will translate the main information if necessairy and will answer your questions in English. Plus you don’t need language to understand the side program 🙂 It is like on a real world trip where you sometimes have to communicate with hands and feet in order to understand a new culture!

If you’re interested in a “World Trip through Living Rooms”, you can register via the following link. Please note that there is a 7 Euro participation fee:
