• You like brass music? Then you should not miss German Brass at Liederhalle on December 28.
• Enjoying Fondue in the winter months is quite traditional in Germany. A lot of families have it for Christmas or New Year’s Eve. If you haven’t had the chance yet to try it, visit Maritim Alm Stuttgart on December 28 for their cozy Fondue evening.
• Tango Palace will host a Milonga Double night on December 29 with modern and classical milonga.
• How about a bit of Beethoven? On December 29 you can listen to his 9th symphony Ode to joy at Liederhalle.
• On December 29 you have the chance to watch NFL Football with other American Football fans at Kraftpaule.
• Go sledding in downtown Stuttgart at Stadtpalais: Stuttgart im Schnee/Stuttgart covered in snow is a fun urban installation with special events and a slope for sleds that will be open this weekend in Stuttgart.
• Weltweihnachtszirkus has opened its gates and you can visit it this weekend. It will be moderated in German but in order to enjoy all the amazing acts you don’t really need to speak the language.
• Christmas Garden at Wilhelma is also still going on this weekend in Stuttgart

New Year’s Eve events in Stuttgart: parties!

• This is definitely something you should consider doing on December 31: For the first year ever, the city of Stuttgart will host a New Years Eve Party at Schlossplatz. Fireworks are banned but a laser- and light show will catapult you in the new year 2020. The wish for cleaner air in downtown Stuttgart and a safer city center on Silvester night stood at the beginning of this new event. I have to say: I love it! If you’ve been at Schlossplatz on New Years Eve once you know what a war zone Schlossplatz can turn into. I didn’t feel safe there at all. And I think nobody liked to take their children there. Now, with this new event, the heart of Stuttgart will become a place where everybody, kids, adults and grandparents, locals and newcomers, can celebrate together into the new year. Before midnight a show will be hosted. Obviously it will be held in German and it might be difficult to follow the Swabian comedian Dodokay. But there will also be live Jazz music, a drum band, acrobatics and more. So I am sure that even if you don’t speak German you will have a great time.
• The biggest private party might be the one at SI-Centrum. Four floors and a 3 courses buffet await you.
• One of the craziest events on New Year’s Eve is definitely the Let’s get wild Rock’n Roll festival at Universum that lasts for four days, from December 28  to 31!
• Your over 30 and want to have a great time with people your age? Then visit the Ü30 Fete at Zollamt!(Ü stands for über which means over in German… and Fete is a German word for party :-))
• If you like to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Stuttgart in style, the Golden Twenties Silvester Party at Amici is your event. Dress up, marvel at the decoration in the style of this glamorous decade. You can choose between the Gala Dinner and/or Party option.
• Another opportunity for a very festive New Years Eve is Silvester unter Kronleuchtern/New Year’s Eve under Chandeliers at Mövenpick Hotel.
• You’ve had enough dressing up to do for the Christmas celebrations? Then the super casual Come as you are Silvester Party at Maulwurf is the event you want to go to!
• The one and only Rock New Year’s Eve Party of Stuttgart awaits you at Classic Rock Cafe.
• Music from the 80s and 90s awaits you at LKA Longhorn.
• Swing into 2020 at HappyFeet.
• Tango Palace organizes a Milonga-Silvester.
• How about a karaoke party for New Years Eve?! Then visit Q-Stuttgart!
• For all of you who don’t want to stop partying when the sun comes up: At Boa they organize an After Hour Silvester Party that starts at 5 am on January 1!

• Stadtbibliothek Stuttgart shows a selection of animated films for kids at Best of Tricks for Kids on December 21. The films don’t have dialogues so it doesn’t matter which language you and your little ones are speaking.
• Are you in need of some more presents or a dress for the holidays? If vintage is your thing you will find everything at the X-Mas textil/vintage flea market at Transit/Bergamo on December 21.
• Another vintage flea market takes place on December 21 at Kaufhaus Mitte.
• Milaneo shopping center is open until midnight on December 21. Santa will be present, too…
• The Grabkapelle, the Taj Mahal of Stuttgart, will open its gates on December 22. Next to being able to step into the beautiful building you can enjoy Glühwein and Christmas cookies and listen to Christmas songs.
• A great event for (hobby) singers is 1. Stuttgarter Weihnachtssingen at Gazi Stadion on December 22. Sing German and international Christmas songs with hundreds of other people in the stadium and get into the right mood for Christmas.

• Visiting this design fair is a tradition with many locals: Holy Shit Shopping is THE place where you can find your last-minute Christmas presents that don’t look like such. Phoenixhalle, December 21 and 22.

Top 7 stall at Stuttgart Christmas market 2019

If you feel like Swabian food, have the Schwaben Liebe plate at curlles culinarium! It comes with one Maultasche (they even have vegetarian ones!!) and Käsespätzle (Swabian cheese noodles). And at currles the Käsespätzle are not made with a random cheese, no! They have a huge cheese wheel of Bergkäse/mountain cheese where they put the hot noodles in. Käsespätzle and Maultaschen are not a traditional Christmas dish but if you want to try local food while visiting Stuttgart Christmas market, this is your chance. currles culinarium is located at Marktplatz, next to the fountain.

Top 6 stall at Christmas market 2019

Here comes a traditional food of Stuttgart Christmas market that isn’t even German: Langos! Langosh is a Hungarian speciality and consists of deep fried dough with various toppings. My favorite topping: garlic sauce! If you don’t want to smell like garlic for the rest of the day, sour cream and cheese is also awesome and very popular 🙂 There are two stalls that sell Langos that I can recommend personally. One of them is also located at Marktplatz next to the fountain, the other one is next to Altes Schloss, in Dorotheenstraße.

Top 5 stall at Stuttgart Christmas market 2019

Christstollen, a traditional German fruit bread, is very popular for the Christmas season. You can buy it in many bakeries and even supermarkets like Edeka and even Aldi sells them. I have to admit I was never a huge fan because mostly the bakeries use candied fruits and raisins and the bread tastes too sweet and is a bit dry. BUT this year I have found a stall that sells what I think is the best Christstollen in the whole wide world! 🙂 Directly at Schlossplatz you find Beckabeck and they sell Albstollen. You HAVE TO try it! Instead of raisins they use cherries and that makes a huuuuge difference. The bread is juicy and sososooooo tasty! I came back 3 times to buy new Christstollen this year! 🙂

Top 4 stall at Stuttgart Christmas market 2019

You find the BEST Glühwein of Stuttgart Christmas market at Schillerplatz. The stall Zum Schäfer sells Glühwein that is made with wine from the local vineyard Zaiß. They produce high quality wine and therefore the Glühwein is also really good. Next to the traditional red mulled wine they even sell white and rosé Glühwein! How awesome is that?! 😀 My favorite is the white one.

Top 3 stall at Stuttgart Christmas market 2019

The Finnish version of Glühwein is called Glögi and you can try it at Karlsplatz at the Finnish Christmas Village. Glögi is made of Finnish berries. If the German Glühwein is a bit too sweet for your taste Glögi might be your drink of choice. Less sweet, more fruity.

Top 2 stall at Stuttgart Christmas market 2019

If all these fruity hot drinks are not your thing, how about Mead?! There is only one stall at Stuttgart Christmas market that sells it and you find it next to Schillerplatz on Kirchstraße (in between Schillerplatz and Marktplatz). This stall is super traditional and has been around for 40 years! They even sell an alcohol free punsh that is infused with real honey and tastes REALLY good (as a breastfeeding mom I am always super thankful when I find yummy alternatives to the alcoholic drinks and this punsh made my day :-)). This year, Moritz has tried their Mead with cherry juice and liked it a lot, too. This stall also sells a lot of honey themed (alcoholic) beverages and products for take away.

Two words: Smoked salmon! No, four words: World best smoked salmon!!! “Where?!?” you might ask now. At the Finnish Christmas Village at Karlsplatz. Seriously, if you like salmon you DO NOT WANT TO MISS this stall. Their salmon is amazing. They have open fires next to the stall and smoke the fish right there. You can order a plate of smoked salmon or smoked salmon in a bread roll. Either option tastes delicious. Again: YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS IT! Trust me! 🙂

• The Christmas Market in Stuttgart is open until December 23. Have you ever noticed that the town hall turns into a huge Advent Calender every December? Each day, a window will be opened, showing one of the coat of arms of the districts of Stuttgart. Along with this a choir representing this quarter will perform for free on the steps in front of the entrance.
• There are SO MANY Christmas markets in the  Stuttgart region that I have decided to introduce my favorite ones in a separate post.
• Get away from the usual hustle around Christmas and dive into the enchanted Christmas Garden at Wilhelma until January 6. Beautiful light installations await you, embedded in the fairytale setting of the botanical garden. • Shop for very special presents like hand-made jewellery, designer lamps and more at the design fair Schöne Bescherung at Phoenixhalle on November 30 and December 1.
• After Stadtpalais brought the sea to Stuttgart this summer with “Stuttgart am Meer” and helped us fight the heat with the huge outdoor pool the creative minds of the museum have another fun attraction going on this winter: Stuttgart im Schnee/Stuttgart covered in snow is another urban installation with special events and a slope for sleds that will be open until February 29.
• You like to dance and you like cake? Then the social dance event Swing ‘n’ Cake is your thing! You can dance the night away on December 1 and 15 at Weltcafé.
• How about a fun pre-Christmas train ride in a historical U-Bahn while enjoying a glass of Glühwein and some Lebkuchen? Sounds good? Then you should catch the Glühweinexpress on December 1, 15, 21, 22, 26!
• Mamas: Have you ever attended a classical concert with your little one(s)? Probably not. But here comes your chance: At Babykonzert on December 1 everybody is welcome, especially the smallest of listeners.
• Learn more about the North Korea from someone who has been there at the reading Undercover in North Korea on December 2 at Hospitalhof.
• The NEW English American Theater will present It’s a wonderful life – a story of the idealistic George Bailey who considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve – on December 2 at Kulturcafe Merlin and on December 5, 11 and 21 at Theater am Olgaeck.

• On December 5 the spectacular Weltweihnachtszirkus (World Christmas Circus) will open it’s gates again. Even though the show will be in German, you will definitely enjoy the acts even if you don’t speak the language.
• There is a language exchange going on every Thursday at Samay: on December 5, 12 and 19.
• If the super sweet mulled wine at the Christmas markets is not your thing, try Glühweinparty at Wein-Moment on December 6!
• Have you ever tried Raclette? This Swiss dish is a must for cheese-lovers. Picture melted cheese with soft potatoes, mini corn and more… Yuuuuummmmm! Then you should book at table at Café Justus for Raclette Night on December 6, 13 and 20!
• Visit the amazing Chocolate festival in Tübingen and make new friends along the way. Stuttgart Expat Meetups organizes a fun trip to chololART on December 7!
• Watch a British Panto production, performed by the New English American Theater, at Kulturwerk on December 7 and 8: Mother Goose and the Golden Egg 
• TEDWomen is the female version of the famous TED talks. You can follow the conference on December 11 at Cinemaxx.
• More chocolate: The International Student Organization Hohenheim organizes a Ritter Sport Factory Tour on December 12.
• Polarized America: What still unites the US is the title of a discussion that will take place on December 12. Representatives the Democrats Abroad and Republicans Overseas will meet at the DAZ to take a stand on those significant issues.
• Learn how to create an art journal cover, calendar cover, book cover, or bookmarks on December 14 at the DoodleArt workshop at Rudolfs Cafe.
• Shop for creative Christmas gifts at KunstKaufHaus on December 14 and 15 at Wagenhallen. More than 100 artists, start-ups and small labels will be present.
• On December 16 Theater Rampe invites everybody who lives in Stuttgart but doesn’t speak much German to join the language café/Sprachcafé Feierabend, Habibi.
• Be part of an old Russian Christmas tradition on December 19 and 20 at Theater am Faden: Wertep was performed a lot in the 18th century in Russia, Belarus, Poland and Ukraine. A Wertep theater is located in a portable wooden box that holds two mini stages. The story of the three Magi is performed on the upper stage, the story of King Herod on the lower stage with miniature figures. Sounds like a lovely Christmas tradition!
• Visiting this design fair is a tradition with many locals: Holy Shit Shopping is THE place where you can find your last-minute Christmas presents that don’t look like such. Phoenixhalle, December 21 and 22.

Christmas Markets in Stuttgart

• The most obvious Christmas Market to visit for anybody living in Stuttgart is the big one in Stuttgart. It stretches from Schlossplatz via Karlsplatz all the way to Marktplatz. Stuttgart Christmas Market is not only one of the biggest Christmas Markets in the area, it’s also particularly pretty because all of the stands display an individual roof decoration. There is even a competition going on and one lucky stand wins a prize for the most beautiful decoration every year! Next to many food stands you also find some fun rides for kids at Stuttgarter Weihnachtsmarkt. Moreover you can enjoy a concert for free every evening as choirs are performing daily on the stairs in front of the city hall. Tip from a local: Take the public transport to get to Stuttgart Christmas Market! The U-Bahn stations Schlossplatz, Charlottenplatz and Rathaus are close by as well as the S-Bahn stations Hauptbahnhof and Stadtmitte. Stuttgart Christmas Market is open from November 27 until December 23.
  
• One special part of Stuttgarter Weihnachtsmarkt is the Finnish Christmas Village (Finnisches Weihnachtsdorf). Here you can enjoy smoked salmon, drink a glass of Glögi (the Finnish version of mulled wine) and shop for Scandinavian products. The Finnish Christmas Village is located at Karlsplatz, right next to the U-Bahn station Charlottenplatz and it is open from November 27. to December 22.
• Also part of the Christmas Market in Stuttgart but technically a market for itself is Wintertraum at Schlossplatz. If offers an ice rink as well as several food stands. Moreover, it is open even after Christmas, from November 20 until January 1.
• Not really a Christmas Market but a very special Christmas attraction is Christmas Garden at Wilhelma. When it is getting dark, the botanical and zoological gardens at Wilhelma light up brightly. More than 20 light installations await you along a 2 km loop and food stands invite you to take a break and enjoy the romantic atmosphere. Christmas Garden is open between November 14 and  January 6. Mind that you have to buy a ticket in advance in order to get inside. If you want to get an idea of what awaits you check out my post about my visit to Christmas Garden at Wilhelma from last year.
  
• There is an alternative Christmas market going on at Marienplatz between November 29 and December 15 called Wouahou Winterdorf / Wouahou Winter Village. Not only food stands and little shops await you but also information stands for sustainability and a big tipi.
• At Adventsmarkt im Hospitalhof you can shop for handmade products on December 3.
• A Beer Adventsmarkt will take place on December 6 and 7 at Cast Brauerei Stuttgart. There will be more than 50 different beer styles available to drink and purchase as christmas gifts for your special someone!
• A small and very cozy Christmas market is Adventszauber at Mozartplatz/Heusteigviertel on December 15. Local shops like present themselves with stands and next to yummy food and drinks, live music, a special fire show and attractions for the kids await you.
• On December 21 the first Vegan Christmas Market of Stuttgart will take place at Karl-Kloß-Jugendbildungsstätte. Next to vegan food you might find the one or other Christmas gift.
• Most  the quarters of Stuttgart have their own, small Christmas markets going on, mostly only for a weekend. For example in Vaihingen from November 30 to December 1, in Weilimdorf from November 30 to December 1 too and in Bad Cannstatt from November 26 to December 23.

Christmas Markets around Stuttgart

• The Esslingen Christmas Market is probably one of the most famous markets in the area because of its medieval part. At the Esslingen Medieval Market you can find merchants in historical garments offering their goods, craftsmen like pewterers, felt-makers, and glass-blowers demonstrating their craftsmanship and artists fascinating their audience with juggling, music and more. Definitely worth a visit! Tip from a local: Go early and during the week! It is always crowded there but it get’s worse on weekends and in the evening. The Esslingen Medieval Market and Christmas Market is open from November 26 until December 22.
• You find another historically themed Christmas Market in Ludwigsburg. With all the light installations the  Ludwigsburg Baroque Christmas Market is definitely a beauty. Nestled between two baroque churches and underneath the huge illuminated wings of angels you will feel enchanted right away. It is open from November 26 to December 22.
• Another very special Christmas market takes place between December 3 and 8 in Tübingen: chocolART! You might guess it already: it’s all about chocolate!! 😀
• In Fellbach a Christmas Market as well as an ice rink await you. Moreover a special program for kids is organized next to the town hall. Fellbach Christmas Market is open from November 30 until December 21.
• The beer garden Schwabengarten in Leinfelden has turned into a Winter Village. WinterdörfLE is not a real Christmas Market as the stands where you can buy gifts are missing. But you find four food stands and an open fire there. And if you’re into curling, you can go for it here, too.
• Castle Hohenzollern is worth a visit anyway but on when it turns into a medieval Christmas Market it is even more stunning. You can visit the Royal Christmas Market / Königlicher Weihnachtsmarkt from November 29 to December 2 and again from December 6 to 8. Please mind that you have to pay an entrance fee to get in the castle.
• Ever visited a Christmas Market in a stable? You can do so at Gärtringen-Rohrau on December 7 and 8 as well as 14 and 15. Rohrauer Stallweihnachtsmarkt awaits you in the stable of an organic farm. Here you find stands from local producers who are selling handmade goods and you can watch traditional craftsmen performing their work.
• At Waiblingen Christmas Market you will find something very special: Christmas cellars! In these cellars handmade goods as well as an exhibition of Christmas calendars await you. The Christmas Market in Waiblingen is open from November 29 to December 19.
• Shop for the perfect Christmas tree while enjoying a glass of Glühwein or browsing through locally produced artwork at Christbaummarkt Prevorst in Oberstenfeld-Prevorst on every weekend before Christmas starting on December 8.

• Celebrate Christmas Latin style with Feliz Navidad and great songs from Latin America at Liederhalle on December 15.
• On December 15 you can shop ’till you drop because it’s Long Shopping Night in Stuttgart again! Many shops will be open until midnight.
• Get into the right swing for Christmas at the Swinging Christmas Party on December 16 at Kulturwerk.
• A lovely little Christmas market you shouldn’t miss is Adventszauber at Mozartplatz on December 16. Kids will love the fire show, the fresh popcorn and more. And adults the live music and food stands in general 🙂
• At the fair for design and craftmanship Kunstkaufhaus you can shop for Christmas presents or the one or other treasure for yourself. The fair is going on between December 15 and 16 in Stuttgart at Wagenhallen.
• If you want to watch a great show you should consider visiting Grand Revue at Friedrichsbau. World class singers, dancers and acrobats await you on December 15 at 8 pm and on December 16 at 6 pm.
• The Christmas Market in Stuttgart is still going on this weekend.
• If you want to enjoy a  visit at Christmas Garden in Stuttgart you can do so on December 15 and 16.

• Laugh the night away at English Comedy Night with stand-up comedian Jack Holmes at Climax Institutes on December 8.
• The vineyard Weinfactum in Bad Cannstatt organizes their very own little Christmas market with high quality Glühwein and more on December 8.
• Visit Waldweihnacht and celebrate a Christmas market in the forest at Haus des Waldes in Degerloch until December 8.
• Shop for pretty used cloth at the Style Flea Market at Kaufhaus Mitte on December 8…
• …or change some of your used cloth at Kleidertausch Party (Cloth Exchange Party) on December 8 at Welthaus.
• The gay community celebrates at Kings Club with mixed music on December 8.
• Get to know the creative hub Wagenhalle on their day of the open door on December 8 and peek into the different ateliers.
