[Transparency: This article contains non-paid advertisements based on personal experience.]

Cafe Isla is a small and cozy place, located at Hospitalviertel, close to Berliner Platz/Liederhalle.

The name “Isla” is Spanish and translates to island. And that’s actually what this cafe wants to be: an island of relaxation in downtown Stuttgart. And I have to say I felt quite relaxed when I was there. It was not crowded at all.

You can have breakfast, brunch or lunch here or just pop in for a cup of coffee and a piece of cake or a DIY cupcake. The lunch menu changes every week and they are actually quite proud of their homemade pies, something you don’t get that often in Stuttgart.

I had to try the DIY cupcake! You can make a selection of the different ingredients at the bar and then enjoy your own, very special creation.

I chose a regular cupcake for the basis with chocolate and coconut cream. Yummy 🙂

It came out quite big actually and didn’t look much like a cupcake anymore 😀

And actually also the hot chocolate is kind of a DIY thing – you get served hot milk and organic chocolate drops which you put together yourself. I like 🙂

What I liked about Cafe Isla in Stuttgart

I really liked the relaxed atmosphere and the stylish interior. And creating your own cupcake is definitely fun, too.

What I didn’t like

All the desserts me and my friends tried were very sweet. I personally like it sweet but for some it was a bit too much.

[Transparency: This article contains non-paid advertisements based on my personal experience.]

The first time I went to Citizen Long in Stuttgart on a late Saturday morning with Moritz to have breakfast or brunch. I had seen pictures of the interior on Instagram and read some review so I was very curious to try the new place myself.

The interior of Citizen Long is quite lofty and urban which I like a lot. It was not full at all when we went there but maybe that has changed nowadays.

When we checked the menu I was quite surprised I have to say. I expected “fusion kitchen” to be a mix of Asian and European dishes. However the breakfast menu consisted mainly of European alternatives. I went for avocado bread, Moritz tried the humus bread and we shared a fruit bowl followed by a piece of cake. As I said, not very Asian, right?

The bread was very good, organic and wholegrain and thus very rich and tasty.

The fruit bowl was a bit smaller than I would have expected but it tasted fresh and juicy.

The second time I went to Citizen Long with my friend Rachel to have lunch. They have a small selection of vegetarian dishes. I chose lentils in a curry sauce which came with a piece of crispy bread. I have to say it tasted good but was nothing special. I actually got the impression that Citizen Long specialized in meat and fish dishes and not really in vegetarian options.

What I liked about Citizen Long in Stuttgart

The interior! I am a fan of urban living and the big, open room with the concrete walls definitely met my taste. Moreover the quality of the food is very high.

What I didn’t like

I was actually a bit disappointed by the breakfast choices. Sure, the avocado and humus bread was good, but nothing special. And the price was actually very high. I get that good quality comes with a price but I would expect fusion kitchen to be a bit more creative than a bread I could make myself at home. Plus the vegetarian options for lunch didn’t catch me.

Next to cakes and other treats they also sell gluten free bread.

All of their cakes look amazing and it is really hard to choose what to take.

But in the end it doesn’t matter what you take as everything is delicious 🙂

During summer they also sell iced chocolate. What a treat! It comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and the chocolate part of it is rich and creamy! Paradise!! 🙂

Gluten free in Stuttgart: What I liked about Isabella Patisserie

Their cakes! You really find high quality here. And that you don’t taste any difference to normal cakes. This makes Isabella Patisserie a great choice when you’re looking for a place to go with a group of friends that consists of both – people who can’t eat gluten and people who can. Everybody will like what they get.

Gluten free in Stuttgart: What I didn’t like

Actually the only thing I don’t like is that they don’t have many tables inside. So on a cold or rainy day it can get crowded or you don’t find a place to sit at all.

I got in touch with the owner via their facebook fanpage and she answered all my questions right away. I found out that Café Silberknie in Stuttgart doesn’t have a breakfast or brunch menu but you can choose from the following:

sandwiches

grilled focaccia

müsli

rice pudding

croissants

brezeln

a selection of pastries

cake

What else can you ask for?! 🙂

When we arrived it was quite empty and far from crowded at Café Silberknie in Stuttgart. I suppose this will change when this place will be better known. But on the other hand, it’s a bit away from the city center and will thus probably never be as full as some other places.

I loved the interior right away. Quite a mix of styles, very relaxed and charming.

We went for müsli and unpictured cake and focaccia. My friend Julia was even brave enough to test the beet root chai latte (she said it’s was an experience :-)).

When we left I took one of the homemade Macaron with me (unpictured as well as I managed to smash it in my handbag…) which tasted great as well!

What I liked about Cafè Silberknie in Stuttgart

I actually liked everything – the relaxed atmosphere, the taste of the freshly prepared food and the super friendly owner.

What I didn’t like

If I had to mention one thing it might be the red chairs. The look super cool and comfy – but they are not from my point of view 🙂

I’ve heard many things about Gasthaus Bären in Stuttgart West in the last months. It seems like a little hype got created around this new restaurant that serves what they call “Swabian Tapas”. So I finally decided to check it out for myself. Here’s what I think about it.

[This post contains unpaid advertisements as I talk about my personal experiences at Gasthaus Bären and link to their Facebook fanpage]

Gasthaus Bären is located in Stuttgart West, close to Feuersee. It is a one room restaurant with huge glass windows that can be opened entirely and will make a visit in summer quite pleasant. I went there on a Saturday evening with two friends and as I’ve heard that it is always very crowded at Gasthaus Bären in Stuttgart West I’ve made a reservation via email a few days before. However, something went wrong. When we arrived they told us they didn’t get my mail and thus no table is reserved for us. Bummer! However the guy at reception was super friendly and told us to sit at the bar and he will try to find a table for us. So that’s what we did.

I really liked the interior of Gasthaus Bären. Very cozy. But it was also extremely crowded and thus super loud. Having a conversation became quite a challenge after a while.

While sitting at the bar we got the menu and started to select our “Swabian Tapas”. What are Swabian Tapas you might ask now. Well, in the end it is small portions of all your favorite Swabian dishes. The idea behind the Tapas concept is that you don’t have to choose only one dish, you can try many Swabian specialities and share them in your group. I really like that! 🙂

We went for the following: Kässpätzle (Swabian Cheese noodles), Maultaschen (Swabian Ravioli), Knödel in Pilzrahmsoße (Dumplings in creamy Mushroom Sauce) Kartoffelsalat (Swabian Potato Salad), Linsen mit Spätzle (Swabian Noodles with Lentils) and Rote Bete Salat (Beet Root Salad). One thing that we saw on the menu that made us laugh: You can order bread with Nutella for desert! I’ve never seen that in any restaurant before. Nice idea 🙂

Luckily we were able to move over to a table before the food was served. Our also super friendly waitress told us that we can stay here for about an hour before the next guest have made a reservation for this table. That was fine with us.

Then the food arrived and we started sharing and eating. I really liked the dumplings in creamy mushroom sauce. But I have to admit I wasn’t the biggest fan of the other dishes. They were not bad, not at all. But also nothing special. I’ve definitely had better.

After one hour we moved over to the bar again. My friends had some more wine, I had to stick with the lemonade due to my pregnancy. One word about the wine: Check prices before you order. Some wines come by 5 Euro per glass, others by around 20!

So here comes my conclusion about our visit to Gasthaus Bären in Stuttgart West:

What I liked:

the cozy and creative interior

the super friendly staff

the idea of serving Swabian Tapas so that you can try many traditional dishes and share them

the dumplings in creamy mushroom sauce

What I didn’t like that much:

that they have messed up our reservation (I got an email from Gasthaus Bären a few days later where they apologized for it so that was at least very friendly)

that is was very noisy inside

that the taste of most of the dishes couldn’t keep up to the hype that exists around this restaurant

I think Gasthaus Bären could be a nice place to bring visitors that want to try a variety of Swabian food. However if you want to introduce them to the real taste of the Swabian cuisine – or if you want to have a conversation that does not include yelling at each other – you might want to go somewhere else.

I’ve heard many good things about the café and patisserie Tarte & Törtchen in Stuttgart-West and when I finally visited it a few days ago with my mother-in-law I fell in love instantly! If you like cake, this will be your personal heaven.

You find the patisserie Tart & Törtchen in Stuttgart-West, close to Bismarckplatz and the U-Bahn-station Schwab- /Bebelstraße. On warm summer days you can sit outside on tables on the sidewalk. As we visited Tart & Törtchen quiet early on a spring morning we chose to sit inside where it is warm and cozy.

What I love the most about Tarte & Törtchen is that their cakes are all handmade and of an amazing quality. You can’t compare this place to a normal bakery as you find them all over Stuttgart. Every product they use is chosen wisely, with a sense of sustainability and organic production. And the taste of their cakes clearly gives that away.

And what I love nearly as much as the high quality: They sell mini-versions of their cakes! This is so amazing because like that you can try a greater variety.

My favorite at the moment: Inge – fruity strawberry panna cotta, sitting on a coconut-base. Hmmmmmmm…

It all started with a punk pub, than named Casino, more than 20 years ago. Nowadays Schlesinger in Stuttgart is one of the places where everybody feels at home. Families come to enjoy a great Schnitzel with fires, students like the alternative spirit, workers and business people appreciate the large selection of beer after a tough day and foodies are impressed by the high quality of the food on the menu.

Thus it is hard to say if Schlesinger in Stuttgart is still a pub or hasn’t turned into a good Swabian restaurant. But definitions aren’t important here anyway because this place likes the change. For the FIFA World Cup and the Euros (UEFA European Championship) Schlesinger turns into a huge living room with fans from different clubs celebrating together. And every year, April 23 is celebrated as the “Day of the Beer” at Schlesinger in Stuttgart as this was the day of the proclamation of the German Beer Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot). On this day, Schlesinger becomes a tasting room and the guests can enjoy more than one hundred different beer brands from all over Germany.

But beer is holy at Schlesinger in Stuttgart anyway. You can choose from a selection of beer brands that is changing on a weekly basis, presented in a fridge next to the entry doors. And as I’ve mentioned before, the food is great, too.

Schnitzel and Rostbraten are amongst the most beloved dishes – and of high quality, too. You won’t find cheap meat on your plate at Schlesinger. But also vegetarians are tought of so I was lucky enough to enjoy a very tasty stuffed sweet potato on my last visit. Oh, and don’t miss the dessert 🙂

Riceteria Stuttgart is located above Schulstrasse. And I literally mean “above”. Did you know Schulstrasse actually has two floors? The entrance to Riceteria Stuttgart is located on the second one. You have to take the stairs next to the shop Korbmayer in order to get there.
Riceteria is actually a combined cafe and shop. That’s why it is stuffed with all sort of colorful products from RICE, a Danish homeware and accessories company. And I have to say, the concept works – I saw customers that bought some of the colorful products, saw the food menu and decided to stay for lunch. Or the other way round: customers that came in for a cup of coffee and left with a bag of gifts for their loved ones 🙂

At first, I didn’t expect much of the food. In the end, it’s a franchise store, they don’t really care for good quality, right? Well, I found out that at Riceteria, they do! I was there several times within the last weeks and everything I’ve tried so far was amazing. At first I just had a hot chocolate with marshmallows and a waffle. The next time I tried their soup. And on my third visit I went for the salad (unfortunately unpictured). Everything was sooooo good!!!

On their menu I saw that they also offer afternoon tea! Definitely something I have to try very soon! 🙂

During summer you can even sit outside on one of their colorful tables. In winter cozy couches and tables await you.

But in the end, all of their falafel taste amazing and it’s worth trying the different and actually very creative styles: There is Falafel Gaisburg for example, with a creamy onion sauce on top. Or Falafel Popey with spinach and feta, Falafel Franz Josef with sweet mustard or Falafel Nobama with curry ketchup. And make sure to order the homemade and hand cut fries as a side!

If falafel is not your thing, you should try the daily soup special!

Vegi Stuttgart is located in the city center, next to Königstraße and on Fridays and Saturdays even open until 4 am!
