Lindenmuseum Stuttgart – Inca exhibition 2014

Hi guys! Today, we visit the Incas! But we don’t have to fly to South America and climb Machu Picchu to do so. We simply visit the Lindenmuseum Stuttgart!

The Lindenmuseum is a museum of ethnology. It’s goal is to present many  different cultures and to explain the dynamics of change within a culture. At the moment, they host a very interesting exhibition about the Incas.

The Inca Empire of the 15th and 16th century was the largest indigenous empire ever created on American soil. The exhibition follows the evolution of the legendary pre-Hispanic culture, from its origins in the mid 11th century, right up to colonial times. It focuses on the imperial phase. Inca Viracocha, Pachacutec Yupanqui and Topa Inca Yupanqui were not only responsible for creating the Inca Empire, but also for building Cusco, Machu Picchu and other world-famous sites.

Colourful and richly patterned textiles from Inca and colonial times, valuable and extremely rare stone offering bowls, gold jewellery, knotted braids and reconstructions of archaeological sites give visitors a varied impression.

They explain the background, religion, architecture, economy and balance of power of the Inca Empire. Paintings, wooden cups and textiles from the colonial times are testament to subsequent mixed culture, which was dominated by strong European influences.

This is the first time that the majority of the pieces have been exhibited in Europe. The exhibition is also great for kids as they have their own information points. Moreover, I totally recommend using an audio guide. You’ll get so much additional information, it’s totally worth it. And bring some time! It took me 2.5 hours to complete my visit!

You can visit the exhibition “INCA – Kings of the Andes” until 16th of March. The Lindenmuseum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am until 6 pm and on Wednesdays from 10 until 8 pm. The regular entrance fee is 12 Euro. Audio guides are available in English and cost 2 Euro.
