Living in… Palma de Mallorca I

Hallo I am Tania and Mel’s cousin. I was born on Mallorca which is a very famous island in the Mediterranean sea.

The capital is Palma de Mallorca which is for me one of the nicest towns to live in.  You have everything there and its a very handy place, because the town is not too big and you don´t need a car to move around.

The first thing you see when you arrive by ship or plane is our huge Cathedral which gets the visits of nearly all the millions tourist we get here on the island.

The city offers a bit of fun for everybody, because you can have a nice meal, enjoy a relaxing drink or even have a swim in the sea just in front of the Cathedral.

Nighttime is a very busy time during the warm summers.  Lots of pubs, clubs and discotheques are highly popular amongst locals and the tourists.

When in Palma for the first time, I would recommend the following tour:

Start your visit opposite the huge harbor where you can have a look at all the luxury yachts and the enormous cathedral, overlooking  the old town.

Leave the harbor and the cathedral by crossing the “Paseo del Borne”, which takes you in this huge promenade right in to the busy center, or to the old city.

In the summer, this is a great place to get some shade. As we have 300 days of sunshine throughout the year and as it gets very hot and humid during summer, this is the place you want to come to and relax – and go shopping! Smiley

From here, you turn opposite to the “Promenade to La Lonja” which is an antique place where the fisherman sold there their fishes ages ago.  In this area you find a lot of nice restaurants, bars and clubs because this area became quite fashionable.

When wandering around here, you can have a look into the entrances of the antique houses which are called “Patios Interiores” . Beautiful, absolutely gorgeous, all made in natural stone, nice and cool with those typical plants which only grow there in the shade. And the old streets itself are worth seeing, too.

When you grow a bit tired now, after walking so much, you could take a drink in one of the fashionable hotels and restaurant right in the antique center.

One of them is “Puro Hotel”, which is a minimalist hotel reformed and  owned by Swedish people now. This hotel is definitely worth staying overnight, too. All the rooms are very luxurious and very different to any other hotel I know.

A different and very special way to explore the old town is getting round in a carriage with horses. Tourists love it but no local would ever do it! Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund

We are quiet proud here to have some beautiful buildings build by  the famous architect Antonio Gaudi. His most important building can be found in Barcelona: La Sagrada Familia.

A very important place to visit is La Plaza Mayor! In each Spanish town you will find one square with this name and most of them look the same as well. Smiley mit geöffnetem Mund

Again, you will find lots of restaurants, sometimes markets and in winter even a beautiful Christmas Market.

In every street you choose for your walk you can see small tiny sideways, shops, shops and more shops. And if you feel like a coffee, you will be satisfied very soon, too.  One of the most famous coffee shops on the island is called CAPUCHINO. Usually, their coffee shops are located in very beautiful antique buildings. But there is also one at our famous harbor.

Another of my most famous places is “BAR BOSCH” right on the Borne. It’s a lovely place to meet a friend or to have a drink, coffee or one of the special Mallorca breads with Spanish ham and tomatoes. Hmmmm, yummy!

And don’t forget  to go up to the highest part of the town, from where our castle looks after us: “Castillo de Bellver”!

The castle is surrounded by a big forest and the view from the top is absolutely stunning.

Palma is also a very  important port in the Mediterranean  for all the cruise liners. Some days we have 7 or more big ships laying in our harbor. The town is full with tourist buying in our famous Zara and Mango shops.

In my point of view, there are three major shopping areas in town:

The most expensive one with all the exclusive shops is in Calle Jaime III, SAN Miguel and now as well in Las Avenidas. Little Designer shops can be found in the expensive little street Calle San Nicolas. At the moment, lots of new shops from local designers are opening at the moment. But I will tell you about this later.
